About Felt

What is felt?  In essence its matted hair.  Usually felt is made from sheep’s wool, but other animal’s hair can work also, such as camel, llama and some human hair.  Felt can look a lot of ways; it can look just how “matted hair” sounds, like a hair ball your cat left on the floor or it can look like this:Icelandic fleece in flat felt

or like this:

 or like this:

The trick is molding the wool into the form you want.  Felt is the play dough of the fiber world.  It can be made in any shape imaginable.  The pages in this section of Wandering Sheep will have various articles I’ve written about felt, from the basics to documentation of advanced techniques.
